Former European javelin thrower Michael Wessing died on Tuesday at the age of 66 years as a result of hip replacement surgery. This was announced by his former club TV Wattenscheid. "The news rocked us, Michael Wessing visited us a few weeks ago," said club manager Michael Huke. Wessing was five times German champion between 1976 and 1980, his most successful season was 1978: In August he set only in Oslo a German national record at 94.22 meters and then won the title at the European Championships in Prague with 89.12. For the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, he was one of the favorites, but could not crown his career because of the Olympic boycott of the Western countries.
