Gary Neville believes that Manchester United will miss Ander Herrera with reports this week claiming that the Spanish midfielder has agreed a lucrative three-year deal with PSG.

The 29-year-old is out of contract in the summer and looks set to complete a move to the Ligue 1 champions in a deal worth a reported £160,000 per week after talks between his representatives and Manchester United broke down.

Herrera isn’t the only first-team player set to depart Old Trafford with club captain Antonio Valencia and Juan Mata also reaching the end of their contracts while there has been speculation over the futures of David De Gea, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.

Although Herrera hasn’t always been an undisputed starter for United, Neville believes that his departure will be keenly felt by his fellow midfield players Pogba and Nemanja Matic as his energy and tenacity compliments their styles of play.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: ‘United need to strengthen at the back with full-backs and centre-backs, they need another midfield player. Reports this morning are that Herrera is going to PSG, so they’ll need to strengthen in midfield just to replace what’s there.

‘I think it’s a loss Ander Herrera leaving. If you’re going to have five midfield players, which any modern-day squad would need, particularly if you’re going to play three in midfield, you can’t have everybody that’s going to be A1 perfect.

‘They can’t all be Pogba sort of ability. You need people like Ander Herrera, who has done a brilliant job, he’s been a great pro, he’s been good to the club, he’s behaved well. Everything’s been right about him.

‘He does a good job in certain games, he compliments what Pogba is and what Matic is. Matic is more of a static player whereas Herrera is more of a runner and gets about the pitch.’
