PARIS – Simona Halep cut the gap with the world's No. 1 Naomi Osaka in WTA rankings Monday after Romanian made the semi-finals in the Miami Open last week.
The French open champion Halep, who last held the top spot in January, would have returned to the summit if she reached the final in Florida after Osaka's early exit.
Halep reduced Osakas leads to 239 points and moved over Petra Kvitova after Czech Republic fell to any champion Ashleigh Barty in the last eight.
Estonia's Anett Kontaveit climbed to a best of 14 when she jumped five places after her run to the semi-finals.
